Pinsan- That's Filipino for Cousin

I have 7 contacts in my phone with the last name Canlas. That's more than my own family. But do you know what gets you? An official invite to the Annual Canlas Cousin Christmas Funday.

So this year, we were really excited when we got invitation. We were a little disappointed we couldn't come to the gift exchange a few nights before, but we know they have to draw the line somewhere ;) We are still on probation. Either way, we went to the Windfern Bowling Alley on 290 to join in on the family fun.

I show up ready to drink some beer and maybe bowl a game or 2. Little did I know, this is a big deal for the Canlas Cousins. We had to draw numbers to find out what team we were on. I drew a 2, which happened to be the girls team, so that worked out! My team was me, Michelle, Gennie (you all know her), CJ (Gennie's sister), and Dina (a new cousin I haven't met before. I really liked her... and DC is her favorite city!) I warned them all that I'm not very good, but they assured me it's ok, they're bad too, and that I better be glad that I'm not on Marks team. "Allegedly", Mark made someone cry last year because they weren't pulling their own weight. But I understand Mark's intensity... after participating in my own family Nog Off, I realized that you aren't just competing, you're fighting for honor.

So right before we bowl, they start naming off the rules for totaling points, that's when and sh*t got serious. Apparently the winning team of these festivities gets bragging rights for the next 12 months. I realized, this is like my family's nog off! So, I put my game face on and got after it. Most of the guy cousins do the fancy technique where you don't even put your fingers in the holes. I've never figured out how people do that! The girl's team, or "Team Fun" as we named ourselves, prefers the "slow and steady, as long as you hit some pins" method.

The first game, I bowled a 44. Crap, I'm never getting invited back.
The second game, I bowled in the 70's... getting a little better!
The third game, I broke 100! I don't even remember the score, I just know I broke 100!
The fouth game, I was a little drunk. I don't know what I bowled.

All in all, the girls actually won a game... way to go "TEAM FUN!" The night was a blast, and we were honored to be the newest addition to the CCCFD. I just made that acronym up... maybe it will stick?

Here are some of my favorite pics. Love you Canlas Pinsans!

I love technology

I'm pulling a two-fer today. Not gonna lie... it's partially because I'm a little bored and trying to ignore the boxes that are still piled in my kitchen and living room. But the main reason is that I had an awesome time tonight talking to two of my favorite people ever... face to face! but before I begin my story, I'd like to show you some pics of my first day alone in DC.

Let me say that again... my first day alone in DC! Weird feeling. I'm definitely ready for Zeke to be here. I went downstairs (after my last post) and had a sudden change of heart on my restaurant choice. I decided to go to Lost Dog Cafe for some pizza, beer, and to read.

They have 10 beers on Tap a week, all equipped with their own chalkboard drawn logo. This is the one I chose! Once I got the check, I realized it was $10. It was also 10% alcohol. I call that a "wash".
Reading "Lit" by Mary Karr and Enjoying my $10 IPA. And for those of you that aren't hip to the beer lingo, that stands for "Indian Pale Ale". I had to ask what IPA meant, no worries. But now I sound cool & hipster ;)

Dog Art
Delicious Polynesian Pizza. GET IN MY BELLY!

And truth be told, the "reading" thing came about because I normally don't eat pizza and drink by myself at a bar, so I really didn't know what else to do. I was really in to the book on the plane, so I figured I'd keep the reading streak going.

So fast forward to 8:00 pm, I've just woken up from my pizza & IPA nap and decide to start unpacking boxes in the kitchen. I got a solid 45 minutes of work in, when my phone rings and it's none other than Jessica Schwartz calling me for my first "face time" chat on our iPhone 4's!! We both finally have Wi-Fi, so we were able to talk face to face for a good hour. It felt like we were sitting on the couch talking to each other. I was able to give her a tour of the apartment, catch up on her latest and greatest gossip, and even demonstrate how AWESOME my couch is! I accidentally spilled 1/2 a glass of red wine on it while we were talking, and everything wipes right up with a wet cloth. You really can't even tell. It also gave me hope... Jessica promised to call me on Monday when the girls get together for the Bachelor! So even though I'm 1400 miles away, I will still be there :)

So right after we hung up, I got a text from Karah (Zeke's sister) asking what my Skype name is. I'm new to Skpye, but am definitely its newest fan! She looked me up, found my user name, and called me over the internet! We were able to video chat from our computers with full sound and everything. Again, I felt like we were sitting side by side.

My favor to ask all of you- SIGN UP FOR SKYPE! It's free, very easy to use, and we can chat any time in person! Here's the website- www.skype.com. It's super easy and takes literally 2 minutes to register. All you need is an email address and you create a user name. Don't get confused if it asks you to sign up for a membership, you don't need one. It's free.

A lot of new laptops and all Macs have webcams built in, but if you don't have one, you can get one at Target for $30 like this one below...

Logitech C210 Webcam - Black (960-000617)

So, I hope to get several responses telling me that you signed up for Skype and that you want my user name so we can chat! I can't wait to see every one's smiling faces!

Off to bed for me, I have a long day of unpacking tomorrow. Jessica flies into Baltimore tomorrow evening and I'm going to pick her up! My first visitor... woo hoo! Gotta have the place looking snazzy ;) Sweet dreams.

The Eagle Has Landed

Hello friends-

Mrs. (soon to be) Smith is officially home! I wish I could end my post here. But of COURSE... I have a story about my trip back to DC this morning. Only things that would happen to yours truly. Which is why I created the blog.

So my series of events begins with Zeke is dropping me off at the airport at 6:30 this morning. Just as we are approaching the terminal, he does the "Babe, how much do you love me?" game. Now normally, I answer back "one hundred million billion gagillion infinity baby, you know that" and we go on with our disgustingly cute conversation. But this time he just stared at me and said "So no matter WHAT, you love me, right?".

My first thought is- Zeke... what did you do?

He precedes to tell me that he was in SUCH a hurry to come home 10 days ago, and all of the cabs were taken, so he had to drive to the airport and didn't know where the discount lots were, so he had to park in the airport parking garage. He "couldn't remember" how much the parking was per day, but he didn't want me to be mad the whole Christmas visit so he decided to wait and tell me until 1/4 mile from the freaking terminal. Nice move, babe.

So I kiss him bye in a hurry and run into Terminal C (which is where Continental.com told me to go) at 6:30, and my flight was departing at 7:40, so I should have plenty of time, right?

WRONG! I'm greeted with hundreds of people in lines hundreds deep, several people yelling because their flights were cancelled and they don't know where to go or what to do. So I go to the Kiosk to check in and print my boarding pass, and my flight information wasn't pulling up. I stand there for 10 minutes re-swiping my driver's license and waving my arm for a Continental rep to come help me. No one ever comes... not a rep in sight. As the baggage check line that says "CUSTOMERS WITH BOARDING PASSES ONLY" gets longer and longer, I decide I'm just going to stand in it and explain my situation when I get to the counter. I mean... it's their fault a rep never helped me!

I get up to the front of the baggage check line only to discover that ModuSpec spelled Elizabeth with an "S" instead of  "Z" when they booked my flight, so there in-lies the problem with pulling up my info. Frustrating. Anyways, I get the boarding pass, check my bag, and head on to security for Terminal C.

I only had 2 carry on items, my tote bag and my laptop bag that had a laptop and our new hip BluRay player wrapped in plastic. (Zeke and I didn't want to ship it, so I stuck it in the bag to make things easier). I asked the lady if I needed to take out the computer AND dvd player or just the computer. She said just the computer. Well- guess what happens next? They pulled me aside and searched me because I had a plastic wrapped DVD player in my laptop bag that was "suspicious" because I didn't take it out of the bag! This is ridiculous!

So by this time it's like 7:25, I look down at my boarding pass, and it says Terminal E Gate 11. Wait.... what??? I realized that they gave me the wrong gate information online, so I had to catch the inter-terminal train to E. I got to the gate at 7:35 just as the doors were closing, then got stuck sitting behind a couple with a crying 6 month old baby for 3 hours. Attention: anyone with 6 month old babies: PLEASE DO NOT BRING THEM ON THREE HOUR AIRPLANE FLIGHTS! Make the family come see YOU for the holidays. Sheesh. This also reassures the fact that I will always fly AirTran. Why, you ask? Upgrades to business class are only $75-$125 from Houston. You get extra leg room, free cocktails, don't pay bag check fees, and people with kids usually don't sit there. I'll gladly pay extra.

Then, when I arrived at the DC airport and headed to find my car in the garage, Zeke and I had a "miscommunication" aka he gave me the wrong directions to get the car, so and I had to walk around the 30 degree parking garage searching for it for 45 minutes. Then I had to pay $200 in parking garage fees. So needless to say, my trip was a little stressful.

But with that said- I found the car, made it home safe, and am relaxing until I start the unpacking process yet again. And on a lighter note, we just got our confirmed plane tickets to the Bahamas for Zeke's all-expense-paid company trip in February, so that made me a little happier. A free trip to the Bahamas is always a way to brighten your mood!

I have some great stuff to post from my last week in town, but I am about to chew my hand off I'm so hungry. I'm going to head down to P Brennan's Irish Pub and have about 2-7 beers and some beef stew :) Cheers!

Nogg your socks off

Hello all-

If you haven't been ON the blog in a few weeks, click on the link at the bottom of the email and check it out! Thanks to my friend Corie and "BliggityBlog", I figured out how to snazz up my page.

I'd like to start by sharing a video that's sure to make you smile. I'm convinced our family has the cutest kids EVER. The video gets really good around 45 seconds... little Brooks learns how to Raise the Roof and can Pop, Lock, & Drop it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVm19GXlwww I just want to squeeze him!

The Inaugural Kirkland Family Nog Off was this past Saturday. After mucho crap talking and deliberation, the winner by 5 points was The Hudson Nog. Their nog started this whole debate last year, so I wasn't that embarrassed to lose to the Master. Zeke and I tied for 2nd place with our Cinnamon & Sweet Cream tasty concoction. And my mom and dad came in last with their thick whip cream thick travesty.

My poor mom... she worked so hard on her batch! The even let the bourbon and sugar ferment over night and stirred it every 6 hours... she really thought she was on to something. Somewhere at the end, though, something went wrong. The recipe told her to pour in a bunch of heavy whipping cream, and whip until thick. Well, the whole mixture turned in to an alcoholic whipped frosting of some sort! We couldn't help but laugh when we had to eat her nog with a spoon... then we turned the cup upside down (DQ Blizzard Style) and the mixture didn't budge! We were rolling on the floor... she was sulking in the corner. If you ever wonder where I get my competitiveness and sore loser tendencies from, look no further than Ann Jerden herself.

But all in all, it was a fun family activity that will hopefully turn into tradition! I'm still convinced we would have won if our mixture sat overnight like everyone else's. We didn't know people were pre-making their batches, or else we would have taken the trophy for sure. And yes, we really have a trophy presentation ceremony! My cousin Layla took some great pictures, I'll be sure to add them once she posts them of FaceBook.

And incase you're DYING to make a batch of nog yourself, here's a modified version of the recipe we used. (A magician never reveals all of his tricks!)

Scrumptous Smith Egg Nog
12 eggs, separate the whites/yolks
2 cups fine sugar
1 pint Dark Rum
1/2 pint Bourbon
1/2 pint Peach Brandy
2 pints Icecream of your choice (Choose flavor wisely- makes a huge difference!)
2 pints whole milk
Nutmeg & Cinnamon to taste

Beat the egg yolks & sugar together in a large bowl. Add Rum, Brandy, Bourbon, and ice cream to the large bowl. Stir slowly while ice cream melts, then add the milk. You can adjust the amount of milk at the end for desired consistency if the nog is too thick for your liking. In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites until fluffy and gently fold into the egg nog. Important- let chill in the refrigerator for 3-4 hours minimum before serving. The egg whites need time to settle... they will disappear into the mixture.

Enjoy! Also, if you have any delicious Nogg or Holiday Cheer recipes of your own, please share in the comments section. Always looking to try something new :)

On a separate but equally as awesome note, I have another exciting announcement to post! One of my BFF's got engaged last night! It really is spreading like wildfire! I'm sooooo excited for the future Mr. And Mrs. Kristen & Justin Jackson!

As always... we have to pay tribute to the bling-a-ling...

Now that's one shiny ring!! I can't wait to celebrate with my pledge sister/college roomie/scrapbooking buddy/ninja turtle/hoodrat friend! Mazel tov! And Kristen- I was serious about the 2012 comment I posted last week. Think about it... I'm just sayin...

Don't forget, HH tomorrow night at Pub Fiction. We will be there around 6:00 and have the back room reserved. We get free appetizers & they'll have drink specials for us. Kristen & Justin will be there to celebrate, as will most of our girlfriends & Zeke's gang. Should be good times.

Oh, and last but not least, a few of my favorite pics from Cedar Creek on Sunday. I sure am gonna miss you girls...
 My TTU "Woozie"- Thanks Sheens!!

Ingoring the White Elephant in the Room

Tis' the season for buying bad presents and stealing from the people you care about the most. Yep.... White Elephant gift exchanges!

My office "holiday" party was this afternoon. I love my office parties, too, because we get to booze and the old guys in the office make inappropriate sexual innuendos about things that are not sexual at all. It's ironic... we are so PC that we can't call it a "Christmas" party, yet we can make jokes about stripper poles and blue balls. Go figure.

Either way, I'm all about gift exchanges. I try to buy funny and witty gifts that are actually useful. Which is why I went to Target Sunday and with my $20 limit in mind, and was pleased with my 6 pack of Guinness Stout to go with these cool Guinness Pint Glasses.
I was pretty excited... I thought it was a cool gift that everyone would like. Well, I came into the office Tuesday morning and mentioned how excited I was about the White Elephant Gift Exchange. The person who set up the whole exchange told me "Girl- Don't be spending a bunch of money on that stuff! Buy stupid cheap gifts! That's what everyone does!" Well this being my first (and last) year to participate in my company's exchange, I didn't want to look like a show off or spend too much if everyone was buying really cheap stuff, so I took it back and went to the dollar store instead.

After scouring the shelves of the Dollar Tree and dodging the undisciplined hood rat kids wreaking havoc through the aisles, I thought I found the worst, cheapest, most random, cheesiest gift...
Yep... Checkers, a Koala Bear puzzle, and I threw in a random bag of Biscotti that I got at a gift exchange earlier that week. And to top it all off, it was in a "feliz navidad" bag. I thought I won, for sure.

So fast forward to today. As we start opening gifts, I begin to realize that I should have stuck with my first gift. Here were some of the other gifts opened first: Electronic Organizer Docking Station, 1 bottle of Patron, 1 bottle of Disaronno, an iTunes gift card, the George Bush Memoir book, a bucket with popcorn and "Coming to America" the movie... you get the idea. Man... I looked like an asshole. There were a few other bad gifts, but I hate being one of "those" people. I hate seeing disappointed looks on people's faces.

To make it even worse, I got to pick last, and I ended up with the docking station. Awesome for me, but you know everyone was like "Ugh. Her gift sucked, she doesn't deserve that". But then, they threw in a twist... they had everyone throw their number back in the Santa hat to select a "wild card pick" and who ever's number was drawn, they got to pick ANY gift, even if it was locked! Nooooo! Sure enough, they drew this engineer's number, and he looks right at me and points at my docking station. JERK! So then I had to take his crappy gift in exchange.

Without further adieu, I'm proud to present my 2010 white elephant work exchange gift.

Did I deserve the docking station? Not really. But come ON! I guess I had bad karma from the Koala puzzle. Lesson learned- never be THAT GIRL who brings the crappy gift. I'm sure you can imagine the jokes that followed since I technically relieved the Gary of the gift....

This weekend is the 2010 Kirkland Family Christmas/White Elephant/Nog Off. Hopefully this gift exchange story will not leave me in the same situation... with blue balls.

Missing someone special

Today's post is very bittersweet for me. I received a wonderful email from my Nana this morning, that (of course), made me cry at work. She always does that to me! All of her emails are so eloquently written, and it's as if I can hear her reading them to me through the computer. Her email had a beautiful note and a picture from the last time our whole family was together with my Papa.

Today is his birthday. It's the first birthday since he passed away earlier this year. It's also the first time that Nana hasn't been able to give him happy birthday kisses since they were married over 50 years ago. While my first reaction is tears and sadness, I'm so thankful that I had 26 good years with him. We know he's smiling down on us. And he's probably even more happy with me and Zeke since we will finally make it official. Hehe. I've enjoyed reflecting back on my time spent with him growing up, and I can't help but be amazed by everything he and my grandmother accomplished together.

As Zeke and I plan our Club Smith Extravaganza wedding coming up in April, there is always one thing in the back of my mind that sometimes is forgotten with all of the hustle & bustle. Not only are we officially starting a life together as husband and wife, but we have the opportunity to create a legacy of our own. When my family is all together, I try to remember to sit back and soak it in. Growing up, I always noticed Papa with a goofy smile on his face during the holidays. No matter how crazy, loud, obnoxious, or rambunctious all of the grand kids were behaving, he was always sitting in the chair with his feet propped up, just checking out the scene. And then- top top it all off- he was still able to "rest his eyes" in the middle of the chaos. That is an acquired talent than surely only fathers of 4 daughters can master.

I'm beginning to understand it all now as I get older. The whole reason I am able to sit and type this message today is because James Kirkland fell in love with Joanne Lewis, they made it official like me and Zeke will in April, and they started a family of their own, that started a family of their own, that will eventually start a family of their own. Even though Zeke and I know that that kids are still a few years down the road for the two of us, I can only hope that we will be so fortunate to create a legacy much like the one pictured below.

This morning, I just looked at this picture and smiled, much like Papa used to. I'm so lucky to have the family I do, even if we all drive each other nuts sometimes. No family is perfect. We all have our laughter, tears, drama, grudges, successes, failures... but when it's all said and done... we love each other. That's what family does.

So as everyone dives head first info the upcoming Christmas craziness... remember what the season is about. Regardless of your faith, level of belief, or relationship with the little baby Jesus... remember that this time of year is about sacrifice, love, family, and being thankful for the legacy that someone created for you many, many years ago.

Happy birthday, Papa. I miss you dearly.

2011: The Year Of Weddings

So, not only was this weekend amazing, but two more of our friends got engaged! Watch out- it's spreading like wildfire! I have a feeling we will have a few more blings popping up in the near future, as well ;)

So I want to send a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to Christa & Reagan Griffith and Soleil & Nathan Watt! Gotta give props to these boys, too... the rings are beautiful. Our men sure do have good taste! And our girls sure do have pretty nails!

Christa's bling-a-ling

Soleil's Bling-a-ling

And since the brides-to-be are excellent pre-planners, both weddings will be happening in 2011. That takes the wedding count to 5 next year from my friends... and Zeke has 2. So it's actually 7 total. So if you're reading this and are about to be engaged- please... plan it for 2012 so I can go!! Hopefully I'll be able to spread out my vacation time, because I sure would hate to miss any of them. And if you're single and reading this- stay single! There are some prime time match making opportunities coming up!

For the Jerden/Smith Soiree next April, I got 2 big things knocked out for our wedding this weekend... we FINALLY ordered the save-the-dates, and I had my dress pinned/fitted for alterations. I am extremely pleased with how everything turned out... the bustle is gorgeous! I'm even more pleased (and I'm sure my parents are, too) that I went with a corset top, because good lord are alterations expensive! I only had the hem shortened and 8 bustles put in... and it was still enough to buy a Coach Purse. So to you newly engaged girls- go with a corset... trust me.

I finalized MY side of the guest list this morning, and I'm pleased to say my friends and family total was 102. That's not as bad as I thought! You don't even realize how many family members you actually have until you start counting... I have 41 family members to be exact. The hardest part was friends... there are people from college that I still adore but we don't talk as much anymore, and I'm conflicted on who to invite. I had to draw the line somewhere, as will Zeke (but this is a different story for another time), but my top 2 rules were 1) If I don't have your number in my phone, you are not invited to the wedding. But there are some exceptions... as a result of my compulsive job A.D.D., every time I switch companies, my contacts are erased, so I have lost a ton of telephone numbers. So that brings me to my next rule... 2) If you've never met Zeke AND you're number isn't in my phone, you are definitely not invited to the wedding. That seemed to eliminate quite a few. Now, when we have to whittle down Mr. Smith's Guinness Book of Wedding Invitees, that will be a story in its self. I can hardly wait...

So it's really quiet at work, the girl I'm training is actually training her replacement for three afternoons this week, so you guys might get a few "Deep Thoughts By KJ" posts if I'm extremely bored.

I'm rambling now, time to call it a day :) Off to do some online Christmas Shopping!

Lots of updates

Sorry I've been slacking on the posts... I know you all sit at the computer daily & wonder "Gosh when is Kate ever going to post again?!" Every time I've tried to blog at work this week, someone interrupts me. It's annoying, I know. It's like they expect me to actually "do things" since I'm back for 2 weeks. It's difficult to try and blog while the replacement I'm training is staring over my shoulder. So lots has happened since last Friday. For starters, our furniture finally arrived! Yay! That's a whole story in it's self. But to sum it up, it involved: - A (probably drunk) Russian truck driver who was ex wrestler (he told us so) - A truck that wouldn't fit under the covered designated moving area so we had to unload our lives onto the street outside of our building - 2 random guys off the street that replaced the moving crew that never showed up. One quit half way through because the drunk Russian wrestler was calling him "Chiquita", but he came back 15 minutes later. And who says homeless people have no work ethic? - A stolen dolly. I had 4 hours to unpack Sunday and hopped on a plane to come back to the H. Poor Zeke, I left him with an apt full of boxes. You think I'm kidding...

Yeah, it's that bad. He promised me that it would allllll be done by the time I come home on the 27th... Right babe? ;) So I'm back, of COURSE went to steak night last night, and am about to head over to my friend Corie's house to have dinner & spend the night. We are having an American Lung Association reunion... Me, Corie, and our old boss Soleil. That job was one of my favorites EVER. It's really such a shame the Regional CEO is worthless and caused us all to get laid off and ruined the office. Either way, I made some great friends out of the deal. Corie's Hubby just started a new job Monday and is in Cali for work, so we are going to have girl power bonding time. So speaking of jobs, I GOT AN OFFER LETTER TODAY!!! You are now reading the words of the newest Senior Inside Sales Specialist for LivingSocial in Washington DC!! I can't even begin to tell you how excited I am to be a part of the organization at such a pivotal time. And I truly feel like this job was created for me! Someone upstairs is looking out for me, that's for certain. I can't think of a better way to get acclimated in the city. I really hope this leads to great things. I mean... It has to. You know what they say, 6th job's a charm! My official start date is January 3rd. That's a good snap shot of what's been happening lately. This weekend I am getting fitted for my beautiful amazing wonderful wedding dress alterations. And leave it to me to leave my wedding shoes in DC. Zeke is a sweetie and is going to overnight them to my parents house tomorrow though, so all will be well with the world. Saturday night is Lights In the Heights, too. This will be my first year to go, pretty excited! If you haven't heard of it, here's a link... http://www.yelp.com/events/houston-lights-in-the-heights-2010 Updates on this weekends festivities to come. I hope everyone has a great weekend like I plan on having!

I think we are cursed..

Last night was Zeke's company Christmas party in Baltimore. We got into town around 5:00, got dressed, had a few drinks at the hotel bar, then headed to the historic Belvedere Hotel downtown. They rented the 13th floor lounge which has a panoramic view of the city... it was beautiful! Last night was also the annual statue lighting ceremony, and we would have had a front row view of the whole thing,  fireworks and all. But too bad we didn't know, we got there too late because we were having some pre-party drinks at our hotel. Oh well, there's always next year!

This was my first time meeting any of his Baltimore co-workers, and they were all really nice & fun. And I'm pretty sure we made quite the impression. Zeke's boss, Don Raider, is a handful. I really like him though, he's the kind of guy that keeps you on your toes and knows how to have a good time. As expected, around 11 p.m. and after numerous Crown and 7's, his name changed from Don to "Raider Power" and we were old buds. And true to form, we fed the DJ Patron shots, convinced him to pay some dirty south music, and showed Baltimore how H-Town does it on the dance floor to some Lil Flip and taught them how to Douggie. Talk about a way to get to know the office! Afterwards, we headed to a bar in downtown, but I honestly have no recollection of it. I know Zeke and I left full beers on the bar and pulled a ninja around 1:30 or so, thank goodness. A few pics from the night...
 Bonding with "the help". Always.

Part of the view, that tall oil derrick looking thing is the tower they lit earlier in the evening.
 Zeke's bartender crush.

At the last bar, Zeke pulsed out some $$ to cover the taxi. He ran over from the ATM with this weird look on his face and said "BABE... LOOK AT MY FREAKING CHECKING ACCOUNT BALANCE" I immediately almost panicked, we still have to pay rent! What happened?? But to our surprise, the machine must have read the balance incorrectly. $31,000??? I wish! We contemplated trying to withdrawal $30k and telling the bank too bad, but quickly realized that's probably not smart. But it was nice to pretend.

I woke up around noon in the hotel with a pounding headache and didn't know where I was. The usual post-christmas party antics. Right as I was getting our belongings together, the phone rang. I was sure it was housekeeping wondering when the heck we were getting out of the room since checkout was at noon. To my surprise, it was the front desk...
Hotel: "Hello, Mrs. Smith?"
Me: "Yes?"
Hotel: "Hello ma'am. I have been informed by valet that there is an issue with your vehicle, valet needs to speak with you immediately" (my heart started pounding)
Me: "An issue like how?"
Hotel: "With your car ma'am. There's a problem"
Me: "A bad problem?"
Hotel: "Mrs. Smith, just please come downstairs. The manager is waiting to speak with you in person"
Me: "Oooooookay. Great. Be down there in a sec"

I hung up the phone and yelled %&@$%@#&*??? Why? WHYYYYYYYY?? I mean, not only am I hungover and feel awful, but I swear, something ALWAYS happens to us! And we didn't even do anything wrong, just stayed at a hotel! And valeted the car so that it would be safe!

I threw on some clothes and ran downstairs. Me and valet companies don't exactly have the best history, and my poor car (Ally) has been vandalized, hit, nearly flooded... we don't don't have the best luck as an owner-vehicle team. I had n idea what to expect. I was greeted by a driver and very somber valet manager. I could tell something was wrong, they both looked uncomfortable, and all they said was "Please follow me ma'am". I didn't even want to ask, so I just followed them. So we leave the hotel,  walk across the street to this lot behind a building, and there she was. Poor Ally. The rear passenger window was shattered... someone broke into my baby.

If your car has ever been broken in to, you know that it's such a violating feeling. What kind of ass much does that anyways??? I really hope there is a special place in you-know-where for inconsiderate people like that. Their 30 seconds of activities that will maybe get them $50 or $100 for selling the stolen items, leaves victims like me with hours of crap to deal with that usually ends up costing us $500 to fix and wastes your whole day. This is the third time now that we have had to deal with break-ins this year. The other two happened to Zeke in Austin. The first time they stole his GPS, which was understandable... don't leave the freaking GPS in the car. Lesson learned. But the second time, all they stole his $200 cycling shoes. Cycling shoes. Really? It's hard for me to picture a criminal by night, competitive road bike enthusiast by day.

I looked through the car to assess the damage. I'm proud to say that it wasn't the GPS that attracted them this time, we hid it in the glove box. But this time, Zeke's laptop bag that was the culprit. But it's bizarre... it's a black bag and was in the floorboard of the back seat, and it was dark, so how did they see it? So not only did they steal the computer bag, but more importantly ALL of Zeke's notes from his first month of one-on-one meetings with all of the DC and Baltimore staff, his checkbook, and I'm sure several other important documents that are irreplaceable. Now, we normally always take the computer bag inside, but we valeted the car and it was supposed to go in the covered garage. Which brings me to my initial reaction when I saw the car.

I said to the manager, "I'm sorry, but I'm having trouble figuring out why we paid $28 for your employee to valet our car in a garage, and it's sitting in an unsecured lot across the street from the hotel out of your line of sight". He tried to say that they park it in the lot for "guest convenience" so we could easily access it, to which my response was "Well sir, we didn't need access to the car, we told the driver that, so there in lies my question- why was the car not parked in the garage?" He didn't have an answer.

So I had to fill out a few pages of paperwork, and was thoroughly annoyed but I was still very polite. The GOOD thing is that they took care of everything. They immediately took the car to an auto glass repair facility to fix the window. He also said they would cover anything that was stolen since they left the car in an unsecured lot. I'm pretty sure someone is getting in a bit of trouble for that. They also removed the valet charge from our bill. We got to hang out n the hotel and sleep while the window was being repaired. I do give the hotel props for being so professional and helpful- it would have gone the complete opposite way. But it's still such a bummer that something like this had to happen, we wanted to be able to enjoy our first trip back to Baltimore as a couple.

Hopefully I won't have a horrible story to tell tomorrow... we FINALLY get our furniture and hopefully everything arrives in one piece and functional. I have seriously been praying that nothing goes wrong with our furniture. I would have a mental meltdown. So if you read this tonight, please say a prayer for us as well! I'm excited to get everything in the apartment and start "nesting". I hate that I have to leave Sunday, I won't really be able to get settled, but I'll have plenty of time after Christmas.

Zeke is passed out on the couch beside me, he was in bad shape today. We just can't do it like we used to. So I'm about to join him in the land of nod and get rested for the big move-in day tomorrow. I can't wait to sleep in my own bed and have all of my warm clothes! I'm been rotating the same 3 outfits for almost 2 weeks now.

I'll update you on our long awaited delivery tomorrow! Sweet dreams!

Job search

Hi friends! I hope you're all having a great week :) I miss you guys so much already. It's crazy. I'm excited that I get to come home in three days! I still feel like I'm on vacation, not like I moved here. Well mostly because we STILL do not have our furniture, but I'll get to that later. Zeke and I have been busy exploring our new neighborhood, and I have lots of fun pics of our adventures. Well most are of food (surprise surprise) and the beer selections at the places we have visited, but it will still give you an idea of the new 'hood. I will work on that post tomorrow when I have some "free time".

Now I know you're thinking, wait... free time? Kate... you don't have a job so what the heck have you been doing. On the contrary-  we have hardly had time to breathe. This is the first time I have had a chance to sit down on the couch and type! I'm excited to announce that part of the reason I've been so busy is INTERVIEWS! Yay! As I have mentioned before, mama would love to chillax and enjoy DC while daddy brings home the bacon.... but that is FAR from reality. I think Michelle Obama even has a part-time job.

I have a few exciting things in the works. In one of my earlier posts, I mentioned I had an interview scheduled with the Corporate Executive Board (CEB). I had my phone screen last Monday, it went well,  and I moved to step #2 in the process, which was a 2-part "Assessment". I was very excited to get to the next step with them, it seems like a company I would have great career opportunities with. Although, it's about as "corporate" as you can get. I mean... look at the title. Doesn't sounds too risque. Anyhow, I sat own to complete this "Assessment", and boy was I in for a treat. The first part was a "business acumen" test where I assumed they would ask what 4x10 is and ask me about fractions. Well you know what they say about assuming. It was over an hour of complicated strategic analysis questions with mock business scenarios pertaining to quarterly regional performance, promotion ratios, gross profit margin analysis... my head hurt after 5 minutes. So after I fumbled my way through the test and was totally stressed out, I had to take this Personality Assessment that asked me 200 questions in 5 different ways. Some of my favorites were:
- Would you ever consider being a jet fighter pilot?
- Do you think people find you attractive?
- Have you ever lied to someone to get your way?
- Do you ever think your boss is incompetent?
- Do you have to have the last word in every conversation?

The whole time I'm thinking... shit. Well how do I answer this? But I decided to just be totally honest. I mean... if they don't like my answers... then I don't think they're ready for this Jelly. So I took this test last Tuesday. And I still hadn't heard back as of yesterday. I was starting to think... shit. I should have lied. HA. But to my surprise, they called and said I scored a 100 on the test (get your guns up Tech HDFS Majors), and my personality fits their criteria! SWEET! So if I get the job, I will work with a bunch of lying, bull-headed attractive people who think their bosses are incompetent and secretly want to be jet fighter pilots. But at least we will get along. I'm supposed to have a phone interview with the supervisor next week and an in-person when I return in late december. So there's one option!

The next proverbial iron I have in the fire is the one I am SUPER EXCITED ABOUT! I had my third interview today with Living Social. Yes... the company that competes with Groupon! I interviewed for a Senior Inside Sales Specialist at their Headquarters in Washington DC. It's located in the heart of "The District" (shutup Jessica, everyone here calls it that). I went to the office today and met with 4 of the managers. My interview lasted about 2 hours. And I have to say that the office is by far one of the coolest things I've ever seen! Everyone is young, they all wear jeans and smile at their desk, everyone said hi and was totally friendly, and they have ice cream any time you want it. I mean... what more can you ask for in a company?

Now, I'm not basing the job only around those awesome facts. While all of those things are cool, the job is way more than ice cream and smiles. It is a very forward-thinking organization with a contagious excitement everywhere. They are Groupon's top competitor, and from doing my research, also have a better product with no hidden fees for the companies they do business with. Their CEO graduated from Georgetown in 2004 and is 28, talk about impressive. They have grown from 25 to 125 cities this year alone, and they are extremely financially stable. If you are a company in a metropolitan area, partnering with LivingSocial to offer a discounted service is a NO BRAINER. So my job would be to call on companies in an assigned region of the US or Canada and basically convince them to run a deal through Living Social. I would really really really love to work there. My interview went well in my opinion, and unless I had something in my teeth or smelled really bad but didn't know it, I think I got the job! I still have to meet/phone interview with the VP of Sales because she wasn't available today, but everyone says we will get along great, so I'm excited.

OK, I need to wrap this up. I'm going to Target to buy some tights to wear to Zeke's company Christmas party tonight in Baltimore. We are headed back to the "scene of the crime"... the city where we first met! Pretty ironic how everything works out :)

I will update the blog tomorrow with our adventures from this past week and will let you know how the Christmas party goes. A room full of strangers and an open bar always make for good KMFJ stories.
