Wonder why?
Sadly, life handed me the biggest, most gigantic basket of lemons last week. I was part of a massive 400 person layoff at LivingSocial. It was all over the news here in DC, but I'm not sure if it was headline-worthy material for my friends down South. A lot of creative, dedicated, and talented people received the same news I did... it was a really rough day for everyone involved.
I'll be totally honest... I was devastated. To me, it was more than losing a job, it meant losing the vehicle that helped me find my way in a city full of strangers. In a weird way, I feel like LivingSocial was a best friend that introduced me to great people, showed me around DC, invited me to cool parties, and helped me feel more "at home" than I ever imagined I could be in a new place. Sure, you fight with your best friend. They get on your nerves sometimes, but they're the one constant when everything is crazy. When I left the office after I was let go, I felt lost. I wasn't expecting or prepared to let that part of my life go so suddenly.
What I've come to realize over the last few days {thanks to a wonderful husband and incredibly supportive friends and family} is that those friendships I made will remain in tact, the memories are still there, and this is a new chapter in my life. This is one of those times where you put your ego aside, pray for direction, and tackle life's next hurdle full speed ahead.
So... how have I spent my last few days as a newly unemployed house wife?
Day 1 {Wednesday}: I allowed myself one day of pitiful moping. And it was pretty pathetic, I'm not going to lie. I wore pajamas all day, ate 3 packets of Easy Mac, and polished off a bottle of chardonnay. Thanks to a 90 minute skype call with Tara and Steven {love you guys!}, and a very patient and understanding hubby {love you even more!}, I finally went to sleep. The *one* redeeming quality of the day is that I got this awesome shirt in the mail and wore it around the house:
Yes, I ordered it on purpose
He he he
Day 2 {Thursday}: Zeke woke up at 6 am {the usual}, and I couldn't go back to sleep. I laid in bed for a while, watched a few episodes of NCIS, and I knew I could do one of two things.
1) Go to the store for more Easy Mac and Chardonnay {not a bad idea}
or
2) Start fresh and find a way to move past this {soooo much effort}
Thanks to the countless hours I've spent on Pinterest, this quote from my "everyday inspiration" board somehow popped in my head.
And that's exactly what I did. Only the drink was coffee and the lipstick was more like lip gloss. At least I showered. I spent the day networking, scouring LinkedIn, updating my resume, and deciding what the heck I want to do with the rest of my life.
Days 3-6 {Friday-Today}: I'm happy to report that I'm in great spirits, and the job hunt has been oddly pleasant. By the grace of God, I've had 6 phone interviews, have 4 in-person interviews scheduled for this week, and am waiting to hear back on a few other opportunities. I gained some fantastic experience during my time with LivingSocial, and it turns out that several companies are looking for my exact skill set. For that, I am grateful :) Now it's up to me to make it happen.
I also cooked some pretty fantastic meals, took Christmas card pictures with the Mr., decked the halls, watched the Texans move to 11-1 {JJ WATTTTT}, re-organized my closet, and finished season 4 of Sons of Anarchy. {My crush on Jax Teller is OOC}.
So, back to my opening statement, what do I plan to do with this gigantic basket of effing lemons? We bought a juicer that just arrived in the mail. It's kind of therapeutic actually.
Cheers :)
